Description
Ducorp Cockatoo
Looking for a sweet and quiet bird that will make an excellent pet? Look no further than a Ducorp Cockatoo! These birds are generally non-social and are found in pairs in the wild, but they can occasionally be found in small groups. While cautious when coming down to the ground to drink or feed, they enjoy eating nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetation. Although they may cause damage to agricultural plantations, these birds are never harmed by farmers.
Ducorp Cockatoo do well in captivity when provided with an aviary of at least 12 by six by six feet, regular vitamin and mineral supplements, and plenty of fresh water. They love fresh fruits and vegetables, oats, safflower and sunflower seeds, rice, wheat, and buckwheat. These friendly and playful birds are also intelligent and enjoy talking, but they can become bored if not given enough toys to keep them occupied. They are even known to be excellent escape artists, so be sure to use mini-locks on their cages to prevent unwanted breakouts.
Growing to about 13 inches in length, Ducorp Cockatoo have predominantly white plumage and round, broad crests. While the males have dark brown or black irises, the females have more red coloration in their irises. These rare birds are native to the Solomon Islands and can be found in forests and forest edges, extending into the lower edges of cloud forests below 5,700 feet in elevation.
