Description

Hyacinth Macaw

Hyacinth macaws, scientifically known as Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus, are a magnificent type of blue parrot and are the largest of all flying parrots. These birds are a sight to behold due to their unique appearance and social nature. Sadly, this species is at risk of extinction due to habitat loss. However, commercial breeding is legal and an excellent way to preserve the species.

Acquiring a hyacinth macaw means embarking on a full-time adventure that requires a long-term commitment. It is crucial to ensure that you are financially, mentally, and physically capable of caring for this beautiful bird.

Hyacinth macaws are highly intelligent birds and have even shown evidence of limited tool use in captivity and in the wild. While they can make great pets under the right circumstances, they can be nippy and loud.

Housing this majestic creature requires a cage with a minimum dimension of 60X72X36 inches made from sturdy stainless steel. Providing ribbonwood or manzanita perches will help keep their nails groomed. Setting up a playpen for the bird is also essential, allowing it to relax and extend its wings.

Hyacinth macaws have an amicable and outgoing demeanor and bond strongly with their owners. They are not possessive over their preferred human and enjoy socializing with guests, including children. However, if left alone for extended periods, they can become cranky. Toys and human interaction are crucial for their enrichment.

These mischievous birds enjoy playing pranks such as playing dead or staring at their owners for prolonged periods. Chomping on wooden toys and repeating words are some of their favorite activities. Regular feeding of fresh vegetables and fruits along with nuts and market-formulated diets are ideal.

Caring for a hyacinth macaw requires diligence, as they need constant attention and care. Since they have a strong beak, biting can be a common challenge during training. Engaging them in stimulating activities, constant love and attention will help them thrive and prevent destructive behavior.
