The Black-capped conure, also known as the Black-capped parakeet or Rock conure, is a parrot that’s native to the southwestern Amazon Basin and adjacent east Andean slopes in Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. These birds are mostly green with a dark brown-black cap, a whitish scaly neck and breast, red wing coverts, and a black beak. The breast feathers are dark with light tips.
While Black capped conure are intelligent birds, they need enrichment and attention in captivity to avoid becoming distressed. These birds are relatively small, reaching a length of approximately 10 inches from the beak to the tail feathers’ tips and can live up to 30 years.
Black capped conure are friendly, easy-going birds that are highly social and straightforward to train. They love interacting with their owners and crave daily playtime and attention. A lonely Black-capped conure can quickly become depressed and develop both medical and behavioral problems.
In captivity, these birds can eat sunflower seeds, bird pellets, a variety of fruits such as pears, orange, pomegranate, apple, and banana, and vegetables such as carrots, cooked sweet potato, celery, fresh kale, peas, and green beans.
To care for a Black capped conure, make sure to provide them with an environment with a lot of noise and activity, as these birds thrive on social interaction with their human family. Be prepared to give your conure two to four hours of out-of-cage time for exercise and interaction, making sure to supervise this time.
Black capped conures need a cage large enough to provide space for daily exercise, at least 18 inches long and wide and at least 2-feet high. If you can’t offer several hours of out-of-cage time daily for flying and playing, your bird will need a larger cage that allows it to fly and exercise on its own. Provide sturdy perches within the cage, as well as plenty of chew toys, changing them frequently to keep the bird curious and stimulated.
In the wild, these birds eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and berries. In captivity, feed your bird a high-quality, formulated pellet along with a daily diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. Offer your bird about 1/8 to 1/4 cup of fresh fruits and veggies in the morning and at night, along with an unlimited amount of pellet food.
If you’re considering a Black-capped conure as a pet, make sure you have plenty of time to socialize and interact with the bird, as they require a great deal of attention from their owners.
